Cost of Groceries

I went to the grocery store today. I bought a package of four double rolls of toilet paper, one filet Mignon steak, one chicken thigh and leg, enough baby red potatoes for two meals and two cans of beer. Total cost was 60 pesos. Today that is four dollars American.

I had a delicious lunch from Gigi at the Boston Deli; two Halibut steaks, rice pilaf, mashed potatoes, cooked fresh carrots and broccoli and french bread for 35 pesos, two dollars and thirty three cents. I can't afford to eat this good in the States.

  4. I want to move there with my wife but we are poor but honest government workers who will have roughly 3000usd a month to live on. Is that possible??

    1. No that would not be possible... So sorry. But it is far more expensive than that to live here. p

    2. I think you can live here on $3K a month. Besides my rent of $495 which includes everything but the maid and laundry, I budget about 3,000 pesos per week and I eat out or buy pre-made meals at the Monday market. Breakfast is always at home because I'd rather spend money on lunch or dinner with friends. So, +/- $230/week plus rent... A couple would spend a bit more. You have to find a casita that fits your needs and price point. I live on $3K a month in the US; I can live here for far less. BTW, I don't live here full-time.

    3. Hi Donna, That sounds like a reasonable figure. I live on less but my rent is very cheap and I have no car or other expenses. p

    1. Yes, if you are careful. Don't spend a lot of money on rent. It is cheaper to live in Chapala than in Ajijic. p

    2. Thank you for your info. Yesterday, I was at my favorite Mexican restaurant and the staff there was telling me how great I could live in Ajijic on my Social Security income of $1650/month. So I Googled Ajijic and discovered that I can not even qualify for a Temporary Resident visa due to the new laws requiring $2000/month income deposits. I think the staff have lived in the USA too long and are remembering the way things used to be there. After reading your blog on the costs there, I am sad tonight!

    3. Hi Al, Please don't be sad. Don't give up. I don't know where you are living now but even though prices are going up here, it is still much less expensive than most places in the States. I live here on very little money. You don't have to have permanent residency. You can go back and forth.... You could live pretty good on that amount of money. p
