Another Sunset in Ajijic

The end of another beautiful day here. The weather has been perfect. Chico and I walked down and watched the sunset. My friend, Ralph, came by with his two dogs. He always tells me the local news. I don't like to look at the news. It depresses me too much. He talked about the robberies around town. A woman had her purse snatched in the middle of the afternoon near the Lake Chapala Society. Another one had the same thing happen near La Nueva Posada Restaurant.

I don't like to be negative. But today was a bad day for me. I witnessed a dog dying of poison on the street near the plaza. It was shocking to see. He was howling, it felt like forever, like a puppy being tortured, and he couldn't stand up. He was howling and staggering and falling against the wall. Someone said it was probably rat poison. I don't know how long it took him to die. I left right away in tears. He was a very large dog and he looked like he was healthy before he was poisoned. A man told me that some people put rat poison on the street in food and to never let your dog eat food he finds. It was very sad. This man also said that if the police see a dog dying they will shoot it. I wish I could have done something like that for this poor suffering soul but I couldn't. It was too large for me and I also don't think I would have the courage to try to kill it with my bare hands or even with a stick. I am not that brave.

I guess I am talking about these negative things because they are here. I don't like it but it is reality. There is no such thing as an unblemished place here on earth. The sunset always lifts my spirits. For me, it is like spending an hour in church. So that is why I photograph them. I don't want to let fear or negativity run my life. Don't let it run yours either.

  1. So sorry you had to witness the poor dog suffering. Like you, I would've wanted to do something, but what can you do if there isn't a vet nearby. Walking away must have been so difficult for you. One of the groups I want to get involved with in Chapala is aideing animals. Here I just write a check, but I want to do more. Thanks for sharing the story, tho' I'm sure it wasn't easy. Sylvie
