Two Inexpensive Hotels in Chapala

Views from the upstairs rooms in the Hotel Canderias.

They have small two room apartments and rooms for rent. The little apartments have a kitchen. If you rent a room, you can use the common kitchen.

The above photos are of the Hotel Candelerias. It is just off the main plaza in Chapala. You have to be in pretty good shape to stay there because that half block up the hill is steep and there are many stairs in the hotel. But it has beautiful views and is clean, quiet, convenient, safe, and inexpensive. Can't ask for much more than that.

The hill to the hotel Candalerias. At the bottom of the hill and across the street is the main plaza in Chapala.

The three above photos are of a hotel half a block up from the main plaza. I lived there for four months when I first came here. It is a good place; safe, fairly quiet, clean, convenient, and inexpensive. The owner's name is Beto. He lives in the top apartment in the front on the left side as you face the building. You can easily find the place because there is usually a life size plastic cow or horse out front from the pet store next to it. I stayed in a one of the rooms for three months and then in a two room apartment for a month. The apartments are much nicer but cost a hundred dollars more a month. I liked them both. Beto is very nice and he speaks some English.

This is WINTER in Chapala. Do you see anyone wearing jackets? Okay, sometimes the Mexicans are wearing sweaters or sweat shirts while the Americans and Canadians are wearing shorts and thin shirts. It depends on what you are used to. What I think is warm, a Mexican may think of as cold. It is all relative. But I can pretty safely say that if you come here from winters in Canada or the northern areas of the United States, you will be wearing shorts and thin shirts. It was a beautiful day. More specifically, It was a beautiful day from my personal and limited point of view.

  1. And those of us in PDX just dodged a major snow/ice storm - which would have crippled xmas shopping even more than the economy. So now it's just rain & mud & fog for the next few weeks. Sigh. Hope you get out into the sunshine & keep taking those great photos! Gayle

  2. Hi Gayle, Good to hear from you again. My family is coming on Sunday. I am glad the snow storm didn't hit because they would have been stuck in Portland. My son has a cold. So sad for him. I heard from Marie that you two will meet in a day or so.... I hope you get along. Patricia

  3. Such wonderful pictures and it brings back such great memories when we were in the area several years ago. We are planning on staying in Chapala next winter, in December and January and are interested in staying in a furnished apartment close to the Malecon. The Hotel Candelerias looks very nice, but could you please let us know the name of the hotel where you took the three pictures which you said you spent 4 months. It looks perfect, and our friend is interested in a similar apartment as well. Would we have to make reservations, or could we just show up and get accommodation. If you have any more information about these two wonderful hotels, we would appreciate hearing about it.

  4. Thank you for writing. I don't know if Beto's hotel even has a name. I don't remember seeing it. Beto is the owner. That is where I stayed for four months when I first came here. It is easy to find, just half a block up from the main plaza. Somewhere way back on my blog is his phone number. I don't have it handy. If you come during the low season you may be able to get one of the little apartments but during the high season they are usually taken. It is a popular place. It would be good if you can find Beto's number and call him for reservations. He speaks some English. Good luck. Patricia
