Star Fruit

I am still trying out the different fruits and vegetables here. I bought a Star Fruit yesterday in Chapala. It cost me 5 pesos. I read on the internet that it is low in calories and high in fiber. When it is cut, it makes a beautiful star shaped garnish. I think I will use it in a green salad.

  1. I use them in a fruit salad with pineapple, watermelon, and mango. The star fruit's astringency is a nice complement to the other sweeter tastes. Toss in some poppy seeds, and a bit of olive oil, and you will have a salad that makes you wonder why we ever lived north of the Rio Bravo. Pine nuts, of course, are a nice addition.

  2. If you toss the star fruit with some lemon or lime juice it prevents the slices from turning brown.
