Breakfast at Salvador's Restaurant in Ajijic

I met this couple and their dog at Salvador's restaurant this morning. We had a huge storm last night and I was out of water and electricity for a night and most of the next day. It is nice to be back home again even though I had to leave my house early. Not much to do there with no water or electricity.

One thing that struck me today was how friendly everyone is here.  One reason is probably that there are fewer of us. I remember sitting at an outside table in Portland and watching the hundreds of people walking by. Strangers who ignored people they weren't with, as if no one else existed except their own little worlds. It is different here. And maybe it has something to do with the fact that few of us expats are rushing around trying to make a living. We are retired and we have all the time in the world to sit and chat. Notice the dog sitting at the table. He was being fed bits of their breakfast. He carefully took it off the table. Would you see that in a restaurant in Portland? Doubtful.  One more thing. My breakfast and coffee cost me a little over three dollars. In Portland, a similar breakfast would probably be ten dollars. I love Mexico. I love Ajijic.

  1. Wonderful! I live in San Diego and it's not a very pet friendly place! Even the beaches have time limits on when you can bring your dogs. We are in the process of selling our home and we sure are ready to live a more relaxed, stop and smell the roses life. Good for you, and thanks for all your posts. Blessings, Keressa B

  6. Me too!! Other blog sites are not set up very well, they are hard to digest and some don't have great pictures like Pat's!

You are right in that Portlander's will walk by and say nothing to you when you are alone. Maybe it's the fear of the unknown? Or they are too busy with their lives to be concerned. Now if you have a dog with you, then that's a different story - they want to know about your dog, but not about you!

    1. Hi Donna, Your comment made me laugh. That is sure true. People are far more interested in the dog than in the owner. But dogs are so easy to love and owners are sometimes very hard to love. I wish we could be more like dogs at times. Distrust runs deep. P

  7. I lived in St. Petersburg, Florida for eleven years. When I first got there after being transferred from Knoxville, Tennessee I landed in an area of all condos and apartments and NO ONE was from there. It made for an eclectic mix of people and good conversations at the area restaurants and watering holes. People were more willing to engage strangers when there weren't long established cliques involved. I flew down two weeks before my move on a weekend to find and apartment which didn't take long so I stopped in for a beer or five at the place called Cody's Roadhouse. Everyone at the bar introduced themselves to me when they found out I was moving there. Most of those people were still my friends when I left Florida. I look forward to an atmosphere like that again.
