Morning Thoughts--looking for an inexpensive casita

I spent most of yesterday online, looking for an inexpensive casita. I received some great leads. Then last night I got an e mail from my landlord. He wrote that he may be able to continue living in the house and if so, I can stay too. What a relief. He will know for sure in one week. I am going to try to stop worrying. If my security is threatened, I panic. Maybe that isn't abnormal.

What surprised me is how expensive casitas have become. When I first arrived in Ajijic, seven years ago, casitas were around two and three hundred dollars a month. Now they are four and five hundred. That is a huge jump.  Even those go quickly. A regular house is more like seven hundred and up. Ajijic is no longer cheap. Compared to some places in the States it is cheap but not compared to other Mexican towns.

I have a male friend who lives in Uruapan. That is a town in Michoacan. He pays 225 dollars a month for a big two story house. But he never sees expats there. It is a large town too. The trade off for living out of the Lakeside area is huge. I don't think I would be happy not having my friends around me.  Plus, I would miss Chico. He belongs to my landlord. I would also miss the great restaurants in my area and the Lake Chapala Society. There are so many advantages to living there. Thus, the high price of housing and other things.

I made several great contacts while online yesterday. Beautiful little casitas. I asked the owners if they minded if I posted them on my blog. If they agree, in a day or so I will put them on.They are from four to five hundred dollars a month.

  1. Enjoying this subject - having been to Lakeside and with an interest in returning for a longer stay someday, this is very interesting. Oh, and "If my security is threatened, I panic. " I completely understand. This is the primary obstacle to dismantling my life North of the border. Even crappy circumstances can define a comfort zone...

    1. HI Stan, Thanks for writing. And also for reading my blog. Your comment makes me think of that old saying, The devil you know is better than the devil you don't..... P

  2. I'm reading your posts backwards, newer to older, so I've had a chance to see some of the housing leads people sent you. No doubt, what you saw 7 years ago for a casita rental was a much lower price than what you see today, but for a newbie, today's prices seem pretty good too.

I really enjoy seeing some of these casita postings. It helps bring me one step closer to when I'll be able to call Lakeside my home.
