A Little More Information

Here is what I know: Some of the schools are closing down. I don't know if it is all of them or not. It is because the Mexicans don't feel safe letting their children go to school. The military is in Jocotopec and in Chapala, stopping every car that comes into the towns. More of my friends are moving out. Others don't seem to be bothered at all by this recent turn of events. I am not going out much but I am also living in a beautiful home with a private pool. It is nice here and I wouldn't have been leaving much anyway. That doesn't mean that I am not afraid. I am.   I just hope things will get better soon. Life goes on.

  1. Hi Patricia -

Has this ever happened before? Closing the schools and checking every car that comes into the towns? Sounds like a drastic move to me.

We all know that the drug war in Mexico is a serious issue, but, if you ask me, the crime in the U.S. is a serious issue. I guess you must weigh the good against the bad in this situation. It sounds as if you are very comfortable and happy living there, except of course for the recent events.

It is difficult to tell someone else what to do. Maybe you should just sit tight, explore other areas and see if things escalate. Sometimes things happen in our lives that force us to make a change. We may not understand it at the time, but it usually works out for the better in the long run. Good luck to you and stay safe.

    1. HI Connie, Thanks for writing. I have been here five years and it hasn't happened during that time. You are probably right, time to sit tight and wait and see..... P

  2. Hi Patricia, long time follower of your blog here!!

I am Judy's Grand-daughter... (the one with the little blonde grandson!)

From an outsiders perspective, based on some of the patterns I've observed, as well as a bit of common sense when it comes to criminal acts.. I have a feeling the crime will move to another area.

What happened is a tragedy, I pray and feel for the families of those affected. None the less, once discovered, caught, or put under fire, criminals tend to flee, not stick around and do more damage. I imagine, as unfortunate as it is, they will move on to another area, having already done all the damage they can get away with in the Ajijic/Chapala area.

I understand the hesitation in staying. I also can reconcile with those who have opted to leave, but as you said, life goes on; and while this is the utmost of tragedy, I do not believe this area will experience such devastation again. Of course, safety, and most importantly, FEELING safe are of the utmost importance, so I do very much relate as to why people would want to leave. In the end, only you can decide.

I will be down to visit next week! I'm very excited; but yet also scared, not so much for my own safety, but to experience first hand the sadness and loss that I imagine is presently blanketing the area. Justly so of course, but such loss is very heavy on the heart and on the mind. I still need to work on mentally prepping myself for that.

On a happier note, I very much hope to run into during my stay!!!!

    Best Wishes,

  3. They closed the school for that day because it was "Day of the Child". Earlier, the week before, the school were closed because it was "Teacher Day".
