More Thoughts on SP vs. IMSS

I wish I had some answers. The more I read about IMSS and Seguro Popular, the more confused I become. I have read that if you have an emergency and there are no beds at the SP hospital, you are just out of luck. And then I read that if there are no beds at SP you are sent to a private hospital and you pay for part of it yourself.

I have read that IMSS is still kicking people off for no reason or made up reasons. And I have also read that IMSS is the best system if you have an emergency. I am so CONFUSED. Does anyone out there have information about either of these systems?  I would really appreciate it... In a month I will have to decide.

  1. Have you looked at the Seguro Popular website? It is in Spanish, but contains a lot of information. There is a SP health center in Chapala -- Centro de Salud Chapala F. Romero De Velasco # 406, Col. Centro, Chapala Jal. 45900 (376) 7656306 -- you may be able to find out about how to sign up there, or even sign up there. Also, Seguro Popular is free for low income people, but there is a sliding scale of premiums. According to the website, they will ask questions to determine your ability to pay. The issue of being ''dropped for no reason'' by IMSS is dicey -- in most cases, it seems to be a matter of interpretation (or misinterpretation) as to whether or not you were truthful when you signed up (e.g., the blood pressure issue). If you are concerned about this, I suggest that you go with a Spanish speaker to an IMSS facility and try to find out more ''from the horse's mouth''. Good luck! By the way -- here is the link to the SP website: http://www.seguro-popular.gob.mx/

  2. Here is a link on healthcare from another expat who blogs/has a book about moving to Mexico. The page says updated as of March 1, 2014. Hopefully there is something there that you might not be aware of.

  3. Patricia, There is a new posting on the Chapala.com webboard about the local SP insurance and how and where you go to sign up. Might be helpful and you can pose questions to locals who have signed up. Hope you're feeling better. Connie in Wa
