Chico is in a different kind of "hot seat" today! How old is Chico now? I know you've had him for several years. I've been following your blog a long time now! Sending get well wishes! Karen in VA
Muy buenas noches, I am at the computer later than usual tonite, waiting. For my two new red rubber water bottles to warm my bed. They just arrived from Lehman's, an Ohio catalog company that caters to the Amish. My grandmother, who collected antiques, had a pretty sterling silver "bed warmer" with a long wood handle. Did you ever see one of these? The rubber water bottles are homely by comparison, but will do the job.
I should have ordered one for my little hound, Scarlett, now I think about it. Hounds have thin skin and very short fine coats and are miserable in cold, damp weather. She has been moping around the cottage all day, with an expression like the one on Chico in todays' post!
All my plum trees are in bloom now, despite the rain. The Asian pears will follow, then the apples and peaches. Not much chance the bees will be flying, so chance of plums is slim. A shame, for I love plums madly but would trade a whole load of apples for just a few ripe mangoes! You have such glorious selections of fruit...
So, you are planning some beach time in San Blas! Like you, I suffer from those damn jejene bites, but have discovered that pennyroyal oil, just a few drops, rubbed on ankles and legs, repels them. It's noxious stuff, almost repellent to me as well. Have you got a personal remedy? Jejenes are the only downside to San Blas, in my book. Hope you'll soon be on the mend and out and about. Cheers, Fay
Hi Fay, Good to hear from you again. I will see if I can find some of that penny royal oil. the only thing I know that works is Deet and I hate putting that poison on my skin. MY friend is never bitten by the jejenes. Strange that they don't like some people. THere are lots of theories but I have tried them all. Someone said they don't like beer drinkers. Not true. Or they don't like perfume. Not true. Or they don't like people with certain blood types. Not true. Or people who take a lot of vitamin B, not true. I have tried everything. Oh yes, bounce fabric sheets in my clothing. That doesnt work either. It rained here a bit last night. what a surprise. Hope you have a great day. P
Hola P, Yes! By all means try to find some pennyroyal oil. NOB it's found in health food stores, etc. Were I looking for some SOB who knows? Any shop selling vitamins/supplements might, or perhaps inquire of one of the sellers of typical indiginous remedies; you know, the little stalls on market days that have packages of herbs, etc. You are right to avoid Deet. Its' extreme toxicity is well known. I've had good luck with pennyroyal, as have others. Worth a try. For me, those bites continue to burn and itch for ten days!
When do you leave for San Blas? I've often stopped there thru the years as I make my way up or down the coast. My first visit there was in 1975. I was traveling with my boyfriend in a VW camper. First nite there, and clueless to the dreaded jejenes, we foolishly set up camp near the water. We had a kilo of fresh shrimp and other ingredients for a big pot of Jambalaya. Need I say more?
Will you be posting reports/photos from San Blas? I do hope so!
My downsizing is progressing well. Bookshelves, which only months ago held 2,000 volumes, are whittled down to 200. (I am advised that, as one goes along, it's imperative to be ruthless with possessions.) At some point, when you have time to address the issue, I'd be interested to know how you got thru the process yourself. It's daunting.
Surprise! It's a gorgeous, sunny spring-like day and I'm heading out with a big basket to pick black trumpet mushrooms. Luego, P
If I am well by the twentieth, I will go to San Blas. I will take photos. I got rid of all my things by giving them to a man friend who loved dressing in women's clothing. I wasn't allowed to have a yard sale in the mobile home park where I lived so he got everything. He was very happy. Thanks for writing. P
